A migraine diary can reveal skipped meals, wine, poor sleep, weather changes, and stress. Yet many people do everything “right” and still wake with a headache or lose another workday to migraine. A complete guide to migraine trigger prevention has to look beyond the usual checklist. For many frequent migraine sufferers, the most consequential trigger may be active for hours while they sleep: pathologic jaw clenching and the trigeminal nociceptive input it creates.

Migraine prevention is not about building a life with zero triggers. That is neither realistic nor necessary. It is about lowering the total neurological load that pushes a sensitized nervous system over its migraine threshold. The most effective plan identifies predictable exposures, improves recovery, and addresses hidden mechanical drivers that conventional migraine care often overlooks.

Why migraine triggers are cumulative, not simple

A trigger is not always a single cause. Bright light may be tolerable on a well-rested day but provoke migraine after poor sleep, dehydration, a stressful deadline, and nighttime clenching.
